Effective from 10 July 2020, the United Arab Emirates government issued a number of amendments to its previous COVID-19 related immigration exemptions and reinstated various immigration fees and fines effective from 12 July 2020. The UAE government’s earlier decision to extend the validity of visas and entry permits for expatriates and visitors without any fees and fines from 1 March until 31 December 2020 has been reversed, along with the previously granted grace period to renew expired Emirates ID cards by 31 December 2020.
According to the announced amendments, the following additional regulations will apply with respect to expired visas and residency permits:
- A grace period of one month is granted, effective from the date of entry to the UAE, to the Emiratis, GCC citizens and residents (who spent less than six months outside the country) to renew their expired UAE immigration and identification documents.
- A grace period of three months is granted to the Emiratis, GCC citizens and residents, who are currently in the UAE, to renew of their expired UAE immigration and identification documents.
- The residents who are currently outside the UAE and whose residency visas expired after 1 March 2020, or who have exceeded the period of six months outside the country, will be given a specific schedule, to be determined by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship effective from the date of the opening of the airspace between the two countries, to return to the UAE.
- Administrative fees or fines shall be collected after the end of the above deadlines. No fines shall be collected during the exemption periods. Administrative fines and fees shall be reactivated on all immigration services, effective from 12 July 2020.
