Senior IT Security Specialist

The IT Security Specialist is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and maintaining security measures to protect Mercans’ IT infrastructure, applications, and data. This role involves proactive threat detection, security incident investigation, and collaboration with development teams to ensure secure coding practices. The IT Security Specialist will play a key role in maintaining compliance with industry security standards, enhancing security awareness, and continuously improving Mercans’ cybersecurity posture.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Security Implementation and Management
    • Deploy, configure, and maintain security tools, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and antivirus software.
    • Design and implement security measures to protect against data breaches and unauthorized access.
    • Ensure compliance with security policies and industry standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI DSS.
  • Threat Monitoring and Incident Response
    • Continuously monitor network traffic for potential security threats and respond to incidents in a timely manner.
    • Perform vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and security audits to identify and mitigate risks.
    • Investigate and analyze security incidents, providing detailed reports and remediation strategies.
  • Application and System Security
    • Work closely with development teams to ensure secure coding practices and conduct application security assessments.
    • Support the secure software development lifecycle by identifying potential security risks in applications.
    • Assist in designing and implementing encryption, authentication, and access control measures.
  • Security Policies and Compliance
    • Maintain and update security policies, procedures, and technical documentation.
    • Ensure company-wide adherence to cybersecurity policies and regulatory requirements.
    • Conduct periodic risk assessments to evaluate and strengthen security controls.
  • Employee Awareness and Support
    • Provide security training and awareness sessions to employees to promote best practices.
    • Offer guidance and support to employees on security-related matters, including safe password management and phishing prevention.
    • Act as a point of contact for security-related inquiries from internal teams.
  • Continuous Learning and Improvement
    • Stay up to date with the latest security threats, vulnerabilities, and industry best practices.
    • Evaluate emerging security technologies and make recommendations for improvements.
    • Participate in cybersecurity communities, forums, and training programs to enhance knowledge.

Education and experience

  • 3+ years of proven experience as an IT Security Specialist or in a similar cybersecurity role.
  • Hands-on experience with vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and security audits.
  • Strong knowledge of network security protocols, firewall configurations, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Familiarity with secure coding practices, secure software development lifecycle (SDLC), and application security assessments.
  • Experience in designing and implementing security measures to prevent data breaches and unauthorized access.
  • Understanding of industry security compliance standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, or PCI DSS.
  • Strong problem-solving, documentation, and time-management skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.

Nice to have

  • Relevant cybersecurity certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM, CEH, OSCP, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with cloud security practices and infrastructure security (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Knowledge of scripting or programming languages for security automation (Python, PowerShell, Bash).
