Components of the Taxable Wage Base

In the United States, the taxable wage base applies differently to payroll taxes:

  • Social Security Tax: Has an annual wage limit. For 2025, the taxable wage base is $168,600.
  • Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA): Applies to the first $7,000 of wages per employee annually.
  • State Unemployment Tax (SUTA): Wage base limits vary by state, typically ranging between $7,000 and $50,000.
  • Medicare Tax: No wage base limit — all earnings are subject to Medicare tax.
